There's a pair of pizzerias in Austin, Bufalina and Bufalina Due. They're owned by an old chum from the foodweb, Steve Dilley, and represent two of his main obsessions: Neapolitan pizza and fine wines.
Indeed, if they served no good food, they'd probable still be the two best wine bars in town. It was great to catch up with Steve, I had a fine time, and there were some kind comps too.
I headed for the original Bufalina, another mile-long walk into East Austin; I even managed to walk right by it, and had to re-trace my steps.
I started light with a salad, then took on the taleggio, sausage, mozzarella, scallion pie straight out of the oven in the corner of the room. The sausage was house-made and excellent; it's all about the crust, of course, and this was beautifully charred, balanced right between crisp rim and moist center.
The meal featured a wine I would never have chosen, and a dessert I wouldn't have picked. Very pleased to have Steve there to help me. This must be the only Mexican wine I've drunk all year: light, almost pink, floral and farmyardy. Does it go with a cheesy pizza? Oh, yes. And while I'm not a fan of ice cream, if you sink it in a sea of liquor, I'm all in. You have to love the way the checks are presented too.
