Tapestry Weaves An Early Spell

I've been tardy getting around to writing about Tapestry, the new restaurant from Suvir Saran which opened in Greenwich Village about a month ago.  I've been meaning to return, but life gets in the way.

But I did want to make some remarks, first and foremost that Tapestry is not an Indian restaurant.

Piracy And Centrico: Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, I went to see Jollyship the Whiz-Bang.  Aficionados will faint at the memory.  For those who don't know, I should explain that this live puppet-punk rock show was one of the most entertaining revues in town, through several editions and incarnations at venues from The Bowery Poetry Club and Ars Nova to Spiegeltent down at the Seaport.

Genius and skipper Nick Jones retired the crew some years ago, but it lives in the memory of all who saw it.  "The sea.  Dark, mysterious, and very wet."

Le Cirque And Johnny's Reef: Ten Years Ago

I've certainly kept all ends of the New York dining scene covered over the years.  June 2006 saw me flitting between one of the city's grand old restaurant icons to a gargantuan Bronx fish shack, with Chinatown and vegetarian eating on the side.

Oh, and it seems I had Apollinaire's poems in one pocket, Carl Van Vechten's last, gloriously dissipated, novel Parties in the other.

The Fried Chicken Circuit

The hot weather arrived, along with the Memorial Day weekend, and a craving set in for classic American picnic food.  A pilgrimage was in order, to some of the city's established casual fried chicken vendors. And here's the belated verdict.

I do mean casual.  Scoffing the bird as part of a full meal, as at The Redhead, for example, or Momofuku Noodle Bar, didn't fit the schedule.  We wanted places where you could grab a few pieces, and primarily traditional US-style.  Although it was revealing to throw in one Korean ringer.

All The Way Down Broadway: Ten Years Ago

Okay, let's be honest about this.  I didn't walk the whole length of Broadway in one day.  Not even within Manhattan (did you know Broadway crosses Spuyten Duyvil Creek and heads off up into the Bronx, and maybe as far as Canada?).

No, but I did walk half the Manhattan stretch, with two charming and absurdly well-informed companions, observing the architecture and swapping anecdotes.
