No sooner was I back from Madrid than I found myself buying tickets for the Repertorio Español. This small Spanish-language theater on East 27th Street is one of New York's little treasures, the company performing contemporary Spanish drama and what you might call modern classics--Garcia Lorca, for example--in repertory.
I've seen a number of plays there over the years, but on this occasion we saw veteran Flamenco dancer Pilar Rioja; and for all Rioja's grace and precision, I found myself as usual distracted by the singing (David Castellano and Alfonso Cid).
We hadn't done much on Labor Day except recover from the return flight from Spain while a leg of lamb cooked itself in the oven. Next morning, I saw my daughter off to her first day of elementary school.
It was a few days later that we ventured a restaurant: Mas. Meaning, of course, not "more" but "farmhouse," this being the Provençal usage adopted by Galen Zamarra's very smart little Greenwich Village boîte.
Kumamoto oysters
Grilled scallop
Flying Pigs Farm braised pork, tiny potatoes
American cheeses
Strawberry mousse
Arroz con leche
A Long Island chardonnay and Domaine Tempier 2001 Bandol to accompany.
After the Pilar Rioja performance, a casual Indian supper Angon in the East Village. Vegetable samosa, the chicken lollipops, chicken biryani, chicken rezala, rice, breads.
That's enough chicken.
