Ten years ago, I came down with a bad attack of arthritis--something I've slowly made a specialty over the years. So the first few days of the week involved home cooking; and I must have had a lot of rabbit in the house.
I eventually made it out for some restaurant meals and a day trip.
Yes, rabbit. Poached rabbit with mustard, thyme, and small potatoes. Poached leg of rabbit and sautéed filet with a bottle of 2001 "La Chavaroche." Rabbit salad. Then--oh, a change--boiled beef and carrots. I put my feet up and read Bernard-Henri Lévy's book on Sartre.
I made it to local standby OG on East 6th for goat cheese-and-spinach and chicken-and-peach dumplings, followed by seared ahi, and a banana roll to finish. A light, midweek bottle of Tavel with that.
Next evening, a trip over to Tribeca, preceding dinner at the new bistro Cercle Rouge with a flute or two at Bubble Lounge. I started at CR with a salad of cold hen lobster with drawn butter, and followed with the veal porterhouse, served on a wooden board with Béarnaise sauce, fries, and green beans. Cheeses were from Artisanal.
At the weekend, down to Coney Island for a late summer roam which took in pizza at Totonno's and Buds at Ruby's. Then a rousing finish to the week: a Let's Zydeco promotion--C.J. Chenier at Satalla. Shall we dance? Apparently I had recovered.
