Let's clear the in-trays in a really random way. The sublime, and the ridiculous, coming right up.
And yes, I'll be trying to get into some of the new restaurants opening this fall, and hope I do better than my three tries--and fails--at Root & Bone.
Sublime? Almost anything at Fritzl's lunchbox, including this spicy succotash with a poached egg.
And speaking of ridiculous, I can't swear I've never tasted anything bought from a Taco Bell, but I'd never actually been to a Taco Bell before--and, like, ordered something. I took the plunge, with junior mouths to feed.
I was told the "GameDay" 12 taco box was the best value, and maybe it was. There were at least two kinds of taco in there, distinguished more by color than flavor, but the main thing was that the taco shells were made of Doritos.
They were called "Tacos Locos," I think, which means they're crazy, and what I found to be crazy was the quantity of salt in every mouthful. It approached, although it didn't quite equal, the saltiness of my recent dinner at Cherche Midi.
Much, better...in fact, one of the most reliably delicious Japanese bites in the city: crispy oyster handrolls at Sushi of Gari (UWS branch).
The fatty tuna roll, which almost disappeared before I could point a camera was good too (strong with scallion), as were the gyoza. Meanwhile, at Salumeria Biellese in Chelsea, they make mortadella, and pile it so high in sandwiches that it needs about a pound of shredded lettuce to cover it.
Just some fragments of how summer wound down for me. Oh, and a highlight in case I didn't mention it. Really good smoke pork butt, done by me.
