[Pigging by Wilfrid: September 15, 2014]
I think it would be fair to say--and I don't believe the staff would argue--that the Brooklyn Piggies storefront on Avenue A has not been quite the sensation of the stand at Smorgaburg.
I dropped by out of curiosity recently, and I admit I was glad I hadn't stood in line for their signature dish. That's it, right there. Pigs in a blanket; three of them. Oh, with a squirt of house BBQ sauce.
Now, you can get them spicy, or you can get them made from chicken, but I tried the original, a sawn-off hot dog in flaky pastry. Three to an order: $5. It took less time to eat them than it's going to take me to tell you that British sausage rolls--on which I was raised--are a different beast. The pastry is much the same, but the filling is (skinless) ground pork, seasoned, and flavored with herbs and spices--often sage and mace.
The only use I can see for these is to eat a platter of them, with a couple of beers, as a snack while watching a game. Sitting down to three of them, even served in an environmentally friendly cardboard tray, is kind of deflating.
But a platter (fourteen) is $24.95, so you might as well eat a couple-- or three--cheeseburgers instead.
