Been a busy week, but I did grab a couple of interesting bites. Remember Mitchel London? Once chef to Ed Koch, he's had his name on a number of catering and café operations around town.
His tiny shop on the short block of East 65th Street between Madison and Park Avenue is stacked with sweet and savory pastries.
My daughter and I were happy to come across it on the way to Central Park Zoo on a cold day, having decided that the lunch budget didn't extend to Café Boulud, let alone Nello.
That's a very hearty wedge of prosciutto and cheese millefeuille. Light, flaky pastry, a rich, tomatoey filling, and not in any way dry. It was seven bucks. We also picked up a bunch of little hors d'oeuvres tars (mushrooms, cheese and bacon) at $2 each.
On a milder evening, I ended up again at Fritzl's, needing something less than a full meal. I had the burger in mind--reviewed here before--but the server offered to super-size me with the double patty burger which was he evening's special.
Consistent with past complaints, I should deduct marks here for structure. Yes, it fell apart, and I needed a fork for the last few mouthfuls. But, you know, it was pretty good.
