I have never met a Snooth event I didn't like, so I was happy to get a press invitation to join some of their online virtual wine tastings. This week was wines of the Ribera del Duero.

Katz's--the delicatessen, in case you didn't know--celebrated its 125th birthday this weekend just past. Despite years of rumors of development on the site, it's hanging in there, with lines around the block.
The line may have been slightly longer for the birthday celebrations, but it's a familiar sight on weekend afternoons (go in the evening).
And what better way to celebrate than having a panel of sweating gentlemen gobble dozens of pastrami sandwiches against the clock, in 90 degree heat?

I waited for the crowds to subside, the hubbub to cease, the opening hours to expand to seven days. And then I went to Alder. After ten years enjoying WD-50, I was champing at the bit.
Not that Alder isn't still busy and popular two months after it's opening, but it's now at least manageable. I've now eaten there on a busy weekend evening (Dewey Dufresne holding court at one end of the bar, Eric Ripert at a table), and on a quiet week night. Either way: welcoming and comfortable.
