Then, of course, I happen to be walking by one evening, and there's an empty stool just beckoning to me.

For my last review before the holidays, I decided to venture off what most New Yorkers consider the beaten track.

To Bushwick, then, named "Boswijck" by old Peter "Peg leg" Stuyvesant - or "little town in the woods."

Quick Bites: Seäsonal Lunch

Worth a quick word about a midtown option which is still too far off most people's radar, Seäsonal restaurant and Weinbar.

Commended by its 58th Street location as a supper destination to follow non-gastronomic midtown entertainment, it serves a fine and reasonable lunch menu too.

Bauhaus Bonanza At MoMA

Maybe you've already attended the comprehensive Bauhaus blast at MoMA.  Half the city seemed to be there the evening I went.  And if you have, you saw some substantial works of art.

So I was back from a couple of nights in Toronto, the days were dark, the temperature was falling, and it was a matter of hanging around town until the holidays.

Snacking: Highlands' Sausage Rolls

Finding myself in Greenwich Village early one evening, I decided it was time to drop by Highlands, the new Scottish restaurant in the old P*Ong spot.

I had only a snack in mind, and just as well, because early on a weekday evening, it was packed as tight as a haggis.

The World Of The Breslin

Welcome to Planet Ace.  Or the Ace Hotel, I should say, on 29th Street, a venue where experience is rated above hospitality, if I read correctly.

The Breslin restaurant within the Ace, named not for the feisty author and columnist, but after the hotel's original name, manages some hospitality, I'm glad to say, along with some worthwhile food.

Ardesia's West Side Cheer

An appropriate season to review this recently opened wine bar as ardesia (or ardisia) crenata is also known as "Christmas berry."

It says here, anyway - I know nothing of plants and flowers.

The Appetizing Cisco

Why traipse up to Eli Zabar's E.A.T. on the Upper East Side to taste smoked whitefish?  Even free smoked whitefish?

But an invitation is an invitation and I'm glad I accepted it.  Partly because Mr Zabar (present) pours a good champagne, and partly because the story of the Bering Cisco turned out to be uncommonly interesting.  Also, if it's good enough a party to attract David Rosengarten...
