Music of a kind, at any rate: The Dictators and The Fleshtones and a sea of mushing, sweating bodies in the low, smoky dive that was Coney Island High on St Mark's Place.

Seems I started December 1997 with plenty of energy.

Well, it's a little out of my way, Lower East Side to Upper West Side and back being one of the less convenient directions to take in Manhattan.

Indeed, I remember I waited months, in 19  before visiting Ouest and Aix (as it then was) one after the other, in a burst of enthusiasm.

So I won't.  But this aromatic tartufati pie I had sent over from Luzzo's on First Avenue deserves inspection on the premises.

Carco himself called it the "last Bohemia" - the artistic and literary underground which flourished, first in Montmartre then in Montparnasse, before the first World War.

But while Bohemias go down in history, history shows no signs of having done with them.

My first December as a Manhattan resident, ten years ago.  Following Thanksgiving, the immediate assault of Christmas - not to mention Chanukah - on all the senses.  Lights everywhere; the music, the music.  It was the carols made me mad.
