Since it opened, Dogmatic Dogs just off Union Square - perhaps the only eating place in the city with a happy-cow-abattoir mural - has filled a niche for me.

It's the niche which used to be filled, slightly more expensively, by 'wichcraft in its original location.

Color me surprised.  I assumed this would be another entrant in the hipsterly downmarket stakes, doing its best to look like a greasy spoon pit-stop.  Not at all.

Smooth-countered, amber-lit and attractively staffed, it's a bit upmarket for St Mark's.  Does not look like a tattoo parlor.

I do not know that I am obsessed yet with the myriad creations of the sandwich man at Sunny and Annie's Deli on 6th St and Avenue B.

It may just be that I find myself here too often after watching post-season ball games at Manitoba's across the street.

Snacking: Luke's Lobster

A new feature - quick posts about snacks around town, and I won't necessarily wait until the Monday edition of the Pig to publish them.  Calories and carnage rushing down your RSS feed with no warning.

Luke's Lobster, East 7th Street, bringing lobster rolls at half the (market) price of established lobster shacks like Pearl, Mary's, and Ed's.

Now, is that because of the size?  A quarter pound of lobster meat is what you get - no doubt about that.  I offer a regular home remote control for comparison:  I think the roll is smaller than the rolls to which we're accustomed.  Less lobster though?  A difficult one.  Luke's would doubtless point to the fillers - celery, for example - which their roll lacks.  There's a vanishing smear of mayo on the nicely toasted bun.  I liked the lobster meat just fine.  Look out, though, for the dusting of oregano salt.  It comes that way - presumably you can ask them to hold it, and you should.  Fourteen dollars.
