As chance would have it, the day after Superbowl XXXIV saw me at Strand Books picking up nice reading copies of James Gibbon Huneker's various critical essays.  I happened to find a volume I was missing- The Pathos of Distance - just this week, and pretty much on the same shelf.

Of course, as you all remember, New Year's Eve 1999 fell on a Friday.  This created the opportunity for a long weekend of celebrations everywhere, but perhaps nowhere took advantage quite like the Dominican Republic.

Can it be ten years since we switched millennia?  What became of the decade?  All I know is that it has become a tradition for me to enter most holiday seasons with some kind of bronchial condition and zero energy.  And so it was at the end of 1999.

It so happens that I've seen a lot of Toronto over the years.  Not by choice, although I have nothing against the city at all.  Clean, friendly and pleasant to visit.

I can claim to have been diligent these last ten years in getting to sundry remote corners of at least four of New York's five boros.  I have been lazy, however, about traveling upstate.  To say nothing of visiting New Jersey.

I suppose it's a venison time of year, and this week ten years ago I prepared a nice saddle with a red wine sauce and chestnuts and baked sweet potatoes.  A 1990 Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains" was surely a decent accompaniment.
