Ten years ago this week, I set off on one of those interesting business round-trips, this time from New York to Kansas City, Kansas City to London, and back to New York again.
The Kansas City-London flight was certainly a chance to catch up on quality relaxation time. Also, to try reading Thomas Wolfe (and I don't mean Tom).
I strolled down to Kansas City Masterpiece on my first evening, for a solo confrontation with a half rack of ribs, some burnt ends, fries, and a "Black Margarita." All pleasant, nothing life changing.
After meetings the next day, and happy hour at the hotel, I dined with colleagues. By which I mean someone else chose the restaurant: JJ's. Possibly the one reason to visit JJ's is the Wine Spectator-acclaimed cellar, but someone else was doing the ordering for the large party, and we got bottles of Consentino red and white.
The food? A mushroom risotto, Kansas City strip with fries, key lime pie.
Next day, off to London, arriving in time for a late dinner at my Soho favorite, Le Pigalle. Typically classic bistro au coin food: a warm cassolette des fruits de mer; then guinea-fowl with braised cabbage. A bottle of Grenache, and a berth for the night at The Howard Hotel, on the river below the Strand.
The journey continues next week.
