[Pink Pig Time Machine: August 16, 2010]
So there I still am, New York 2000, partner significantly pregnant by this stage. A nice Saturday at the Met - a Chardin show, an exhibit on "The Beginnings of the Baroque," featuring much from the Caracci Bros., a bunch of Max Beckmanns. Later that evening, the estimable Jimmy Scott at Birdland singing, as ever, so far behind the band you think he'll never catch up.
Food? Of a kind. The Old Stand in midtown for a work lunch - chopped steak and mash. Hmm. A homemade paella one evening, followed the next day by neck of lamb stewed with white beans. Ah, here's a restaurant. The crayfish season come to Aquavit (as it has right about now in 2010). This time I had them cooked in a big jar full of beer and dill. Fish them out and suck them dry. To follow, a crispy salmon roulade, stuffed with crayfish. Chardonnay of some kind.
And the grand finish to the week, a tasting menu at Gramercy Tavern, moved to a four-top to accommodate ever-expanding partner. It was good back then:
Cod cake with beetroot
Torchon of pork, marinated beets, salad
Sirloin, braised beef cheek, mashed potatoes
Époisses, Pierre-Robert, Idiazabal, Keen's Cheddar, Bleu des Causses
Volnay 1er Cru 1992, Clos des Chênes
Next week, casting responsibilities aside, off to London.
