I had nice things to say here about Wechsler's when it was a newcomer to the East Village, and in Eating the Apple I called it "a delightful place."
And yet when I stopped by recently, I realised I had never tried the place's eponymous specialty.
The website, after all, is called currywustnyc.com; but I had been to busy with the brats and the special sausages (lamb, boar and so on), and I didn't have the best memories of German curry sauce. It can be sweet, to say the least.
I took the plunge. The order comes small ($6) or large ($10), fries included. The large didn't look so large when it arrived, but as you plough through it you remember there isn't a bed of sauerkraut, or any garnish at all, lurking in the cardboard dish. It's all sausage, so in fact there's plenty of it.
Kudos again for the interesting and well-priced beer list. I drank a dunkel which I think was listed among the beer specials. The wine-list is growing too. As for the currywurst sauce, yes it's inclined to sweetness, and is only mildly spicy. Of course, there is a secret ingredient. And I know what it is. But it's a secret.
This is still an excellent choice, not for a long dinner, but to fill a gap in your stomach and drink well while doing so.
