[Pink Pig Time Machine by Wilfrid: August 11, 2008]
Regular readers will know that these were the years when I fell in love with the restaurant San Domenico - I lived about five minutes walk away, and I often ate dinner there on Sunday evenings. On the first Sunday in August, 1998: baby cuttlefish with a dandelion salad, followed by saddle of rabbit roasted with apples, and one of the signature desserts - panna cotta with a balsamico sauce and fresh berries.
Perhaps inspired by the rabbit dish, I made myself grilled sweetbreads later in the week, served over a ragout of apples and carrots.
I ate a second Italian restaurant dinner that week, at Remi in midtown. Not an inexpensive restaurant itself, it just wasn't as good as San Domenico. Grilled sardines with a potato salad and mustard sauce preceded another rabbit dish, this time braised with black olives and served with red cabbaged and potatoes. I don't know what Barbaresco I drank, but the comment in my diary is "Ugh!". Who needs Robert Parker?
And finally, escape from New York. Next week, my first ever trip to Seattle.
